Department of Posts Expands Role in Financial Inclusion and Socio-Economic Development

The Department of Posts, established on October 1, 1854, marked its 170th anniversary with a grand celebration at the Ahmedabad General Post Office (GPO). The event, attended by key dignitaries including Postmaster General of North Gujarat Region Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav, highlighted the department's vital role in the socio-economic development of India over the years.
At the event, a Dak Chaupal was organized to raise awareness about various government schemes. Beneficiaries were presented with passbooks for savings accounts, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Mahila Samman Savings Certificates, Postal Life Insurance, and India Post Payments Bank accounts by Shri Yadav, MLA Dariyapur Shri Kaushikbhai Jain, Director Postal Services Ms Meeta K. Shah, and other officials. A blood donation camp was also organized as part of the celebrations, which concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony and a rendition of "Happy Birthday to India Post."
Postmaster General Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav emphasized that the Department of Posts has evolved far beyond traditional mail services, now offering a wide array of citizen-centric services. These include savings banks, insurance, passport services, Aadhaar updates, and more, contributing significantly to initiatives such as Digital India and Antyodaya. He highlighted that post offices are now key players in promoting financial inclusion and facilitating access to global markets through Dakghar Niryat Kendras, supporting local products and the "Vocal for Local" and Atmanirbhar Bharat campaigns.
MLA Dariyapur Shri Kaushikbhai Jain reflected on the deep personal connection many Indians have with post offices and praised the transformation of postal services under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. He noted that post offices now serve as banks, even in remote areas.
Director Postal Services Ms. Meeta K. Shah highlighted the postal network's role in connecting local markets with global consumers, particularly through cash-on-delivery services for e-commerce.
The event was attended by numerous officials, including Manager MMS Shri Dharam Veer Singh, AGM IPPB Dr. Rajeev Awasthi, and Chief Manager IPPB Shri Kapil Mantri, among others.
