The Haryana government has approved a 20-day parole for Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, with strict conditions prohibiting him from any election-related activities and requiring him to stay outside Haryana.
Singh, who is serving a 20-year sentence in Rohtak's Sunaria jail for rape and murder, sought the parole ahead of the state's October 5 Assembly polls. He will spend this period at a Dera ashram in Uttar Pradesh's Barnawa, Baghpat.
Authorities have stipulated that Singh must avoid political activities and stay under surveillance. Any violation will result in the immediate cancellation of his parole. Past paroles and furloughs for Singh have sparked controversy, coinciding with elections in Punjab and Haryana.
