India-China Patrolling Pact Paves Way for Resolution
India and China have reached a patrolling deal along their disputed Himalayan border, potentially resolving tensions that arose in 2020 amidst deadly clashes. The agreement comes as Indian Prime Minister Modi prepares for discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit in Russia.
India and China have forged a patrolling arrangement along their contested Himalayan border, aimed at resolving longstanding tensions stemming from a deadly 2020 conflict, stated Vikram Misri, India's Foreign Secretary.
The breakthrough is announced as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Russia for the BRICS summit, where potential talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping could further diplomatic relations. The countries' ties have been fraught since a violent clash killed 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers three years ago.
Misri highlighted that multiple rounds of diplomatic and military negotiations laid the groundwork for this agreement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), indicating progress towards disengagement and conflict resolution. The prolonged standoff previously impacted business relations between India and China, leading New Delhi to closely examine Chinese investments and stall significant joint projects.
