The Madras High Court overturned a previous decision that allowed the withdrawal of a disproportionate wealth case against former AIADMK leader and Chief Minister O Paneerselvam and seven of his relatives. The original order was issued by the Chief Judicial Magistrate in December 2012.
Justice N Anand Venkatesh mandated the restoration of the trial, noting that as the Special Court for MP/MLA cases has been established, the matter should now be handled by the Principal District and Sessions Judge in Madurai. A directive was given to transfer the records by November 27, 2024, ensuring the case resumes promptly.
The judge emphasized urgency in the proceedings, instructing that the trial be prioritized and conducted rapidly, with a goal to conclude by June 31, 2025. He stated that any dilatory tactics by defendants could lead to bail cancellation, as dictated by the Supreme Court.
