U.S. Seeks Answers on Gaza Strike Amid Rising Tensions
The U.S. demands an explanation from Israel regarding a deadly strike in Gaza that left 93 Palestinians dead or missing. Washington emphasizes the need for a ceasefire and warns Israel of potential military aid restrictions due to inadequate humanitarian progress in Gaza.
The United States has requested an explanation from Israel for a deadly strike in northern Gaza, according to State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller. The attack on a residential building in Beit Lahiya resulted in at least 93 Palestinians being killed or missing, with dozens more wounded, as stated by the Gaza health ministry. Miller refrained from commenting on the specific death toll but described the incident as horrifying. He added that Washington had reached out to Israeli officials to demand clarity on the tragic outcome, especially given the reports of numerous children among the casualties.
Miller stressed that the incident highlights the importance of a ceasefire, which the U.S. believes is in Israel's interest. He argued that Israel should focus on achieving strategic goals that ensure the safe return of hostages and avoid protracted conflict, rather than persisting in an indefinite war. The Biden administration sent a letter to Israel earlier this month, urging steps to improve Gaza's humanitarian situation within 30 days or risk restrictions on U.S. military aid, a point on which progress remains insufficient according to Miller.
Additionally, Miller voiced Washington's concern over recent Israeli legislation banning the U.N. relief agency UNRWA, warning of potential repercussions under U.S. law and policy if the legislation is enforced.
