In a high-stakes meeting ahead of the 2025-26 Budget, trade union leaders pushed for significant reforms. They demanded the minimum EPFO pension increase fivefold to Rs 5,000 and the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission.
Leaders further urged Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to introduce higher taxes on the super rich and elevate the income tax exemption limit to Rs 10 lakh. Expansion of social security schemes for gig workers and the return of the old pension scheme were also on their agenda.
In addition, unions called for an end to PSU privatisation, additional taxes to support informal workers' social security, and improved wages and benefits for agriculture workers. The upcoming budget presentation on February 1 is awaited for these demands to be addressed.
