In a landmark judgment, a district court in Latur has delivered a long-awaited verdict, convicting 12 individuals for the brutal murder of social worker Digambar Patil in 2003. The attack, which stemmed from political tensions during local elections, has finally seen justice served after more than two decades.
The court, presided over by Judge R.M. Kadam, handed life sentences to the accused along with a fine of Rs 10,000 each. The attack took place on May 23, 2003, when a group armed with sticks targeted Patil at his home in Gurdhal village, leaving his family members injured as well.
The trial witnessed one of the 13 initially charged dying during proceedings, resulting in the abatement of charges against that individual. Assistant Public Prosecutor Gauspasha Sayyed confirmed that the remaining accused were found guilty under Section 302 for murder, with the failure to pay the fine leading to an additional year of imprisonment.
