Russian Rouble Surges Amid Speculations of Sanction Lifting
The Russian rouble has strengthened for seven sessions, buoyed by possible U.S. sanction relief linked to Russia's conflict with Ukraine. The currency reached a high since August against the dollar but showed slight weakening against the yuan. Analysts suggest a corrective phase is on the horizon.

The Russian rouble demonstrated its resilience by strengthening for the seventh straight session on Wednesday, responding to talks from U.S. President Donald Trump about potentially lifting sanctions imposed on Russia due to the Ukraine conflict. By 0830 GMT, the rouble rose 0.4% to trade at 86.20 against the dollar in the over-the-counter market.
Despite its gains against the dollar, the rouble weakened by 0.4% against the yuan, the most prominently traded foreign currency in Russia, yet it still maintained its strongest position since last August. Market analysts indicate a possible correction is on its way, with 85 to the dollar as a notable resistance level.
The Russian currency has surged approximately 24% against the dollar and 15% against the yuan this year, largely due to optimistic views on U.S.-Russia relations. Simultaneously, Russia's stock market index has climbed to its highest since May 2024. Dollar/rouble futures on MOEX also increased by 0.3% to 87.46, and the central bank has set the official exchange rate at an August-high of 88.21.
