On Monday, the Uttar Pradesh government unveiled an ambitious new policy targeting dramatic improvements in rural sanitation as part of its broader infrastructure overhaul. The initiative aligns with the goals of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural), focusing on effective waste management and sustainable practices in gram panchayats.

The comprehensive strategy emphasizes solid and liquid waste handling, plastic waste disposal, and the installation of biogas units under the Gobardhan Yojana. Approximately 85,827 out of 96,174 villages have achieved model Open Defecation Free (ODF) Plus status, marking significant progress toward statewide sanitation excellence.

In partnership with development organizations and technology partners, the initiative aims to integrate cleanliness into the governance framework of gram panchayats. By 2025, the plan promises to deliver complete sanitation, contribute to a healthier environment, and bolster the rural economy, setting new benchmarks for rural prosperity across India.
