A tragic shark attack at Wharton Beach in Western Australia has left a 30-year-old Melbourne surfer feared dead. Witnesses observed the struggle and heard screams, prompting an immediate search that has so far been unsuccessful in locating the body, said local police on Tuesday.

The attack occurred in a remote area approximately 800 kilometers from Perth, the state capital. A surfboard with visible bite marks was retrieved from the scene, solidifying suspicions that the man succumbed during the incident.

This would mark the fourth fatal shark attack in the region since 2017, two of which involved great white sharks. Western Australia Police Commissioner Col Blanch told 6PR radio that drone footage captured a shark swimming away from a bloodstained section of water close to the shore.
