A stampede at New Delhi Railway Station during the Maha Kumbh Mela rush on February 15 resulted in the deaths of 18 people and injured 15, prompting the government to announce compensation totaling Rs 2.01 crore for the affected families, according to a Lok Sabha briefing on Wednesday.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw detailed the ex gratia payments, which included Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh for grievously injured individuals, and Rs 1 lakh for those with minor injuries. Additionally, a high-level inquiry is being conducted to investigate the incident.
In response to heightened concerns, Vaishnaw emphasized the completion of infrastructure projects worth over Rs 5,000 crore in Prayagraj, including the upgrade of rail services, which now accommodate a higher passenger volume to prevent future tragedies.
