The Allahabad High Court has issued a stern directive to the Uttar Pradesh chief secretary, calling for decisive action against district magistrates who have left firearm license applications unresolved without justification.

Justice Vikram D Chauhan has mandated these officials, who serve as the licensing authorities under the Arms Act, to gather and report on the status of pending firearm applications within 45 days. This data is to be submitted to the chief secretary or an appointed officer.

In addressing a petition from Shivam, who has faced extensive delays since applying for a firearm license in June 2022, the court insisted that district magistrates must act within the timeframes mandated by the Arms Rules and Act. Failure to comply will result in remedial measures from higher authorities, and obstructionist state officers will face disciplinary actions to ensure timely decisions on firearm applications.
