The Supreme Court on Friday commended septuagenarian Jagjit Singh Dallewal for his authentic leadership in advocating for farmers' demands without political biases, as he concluded his four-month-long hunger strike. Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh presided over the bench that received updates on the protest status at Khanauri and Shambhu borders while acknowledging the dispersal of protesting farmers and the clearing of blocked roads and highways.
The top court praised Dallewal for addressing legitimate concerns of the farming community, stating, "We are not sitting in an ivory tower. We know everything." The court directed the Punjab and Haryana governments to submit a status report on the current ground situation.
In a related move, the court dropped contempt proceedings against the Punjab chief secretary and the police director general for not adhering to a previous order regarding medical aid for Dallewal. Farmer leaders, previously detained during a government crackdown, were released, and highways were reopened following dismantling of protests after discussions on the farmers' demands with central authorities.
