Norway's Prime Minister has announced plans to elevate the country's defence expenditures to 3.5% of GDP, with an additional 1.5% reserved for wider security initiatives. This initiative aligns with NATO's vision of a collective 5% GDP investment in defense, as proposed by NATO chief Mark Rutte.

The Norwegian government aims to bolster the nation's security posture and contribute more significantly to NATO's collective defense. Speaking at a press conference, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere highlighted the importance of enhancing security measures for both national and allied defense.

The 3.5% expenditure includes support for Ukraine's military efforts. According to Norway's national statistics agency, defence spending rose from 1.4% of GDP in 2022 to 2.2% in 2024. Looking ahead, the government targets a 3.3% GDP commitment by 2025.
