Allegations of Coerced Conversion and Betrayed Identity Lead to Legal Action

A man alongside his family is under scrutiny for allegedly marrying a woman while concealing his true religious identity, coercively converting her, and pressing her into terminating a pregnancy, according to police on Wednesday.

Superintendent of Police Vineet Jaiswal stated that an FIR has been filed following the victim's complaint, and investigations are in motion. The woman recounted her acquaintance with the man in 2017, who misrepresented himself as Vineet Singh, leading to their nuptials held in a local Hindu ceremony that December.

The narrative unfurled when the woman uncovered his actual name, Azam Hasan Sheikh. The complaint followed her alleged forced conversion at a cleric's behest by the husband's family in West Bengal, along with undergoing a coerced abortion. After escaping, threats and social defamation further surfaced, prompting charges, including those under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021.
