The Supreme Court has directed the release of Rs 1 crore given by Lok Sabha MP Karti P Chidambaram, originally deposited as a condition for traveling abroad in 2022. The court's decision follows Chidambaram's return to India and the surrendering of his passport to investigators.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant, Ujjal Bhuyan, and N Kotiswar Singh, recognized his compliance and granted his 2023 petition to reclaim the deposit, noting his adherence to court-imposed conditions post-travel.
Karti Chidambaram, son of ex-finance minister P Chidambaram, is embroiled in several legal cases, including the Aircel-Maxis and INX Media cases, although he has been granted bail. Previously, the court mandated the Rs 1 crore deposit for overseas travel.
