The Karnataka Assembly has approved the Greater Bengaluru Governance (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which explicitly outlines the operational boundaries of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and ensures it will not encroach upon the roles of the newly established city corporations.
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who introduced the amendment, emphasized the need for the bill to prevent misunderstandings, especially after a Public Interest Litigation was filed against the original act. The amendment reaffirms the autonomous nature of the new city corporations.
Despite some opposition from BJP members, who view the amendment as an attempt to centralize power, the ruling party assures that the GBA will only provide coordination. This bill intends to support the decentralized functioning of corporations in the Greater Bengaluru Area.
