Qatar and the United States are on the brink of finalizing a pivotal defence cooperation agreement, top U.S. diplomat Marco Rubio revealed on Tuesday, following widespread outrage over Israel's attack in Doha last week. Rubio, departing Tel Aviv for Doha, highlighted the close partnership with Qatar, indicating that negotiations for the agreement have been expedited due to these recent developments.

The Israeli attack, a sensitive subject given Qatar's status as a key U.S. ally and host to the largest American military base in the Middle East, has accelerated the need for renewed strategic cooperation. Qatar's foreign ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari confirmed the heightened urgency for this agreement during a briefing post-Rubio's visit. Qatar, along with Egypt, has been actively mediating ceasefire talks since the Gaza conflict began two years ago.

In response to the attack, U.S. President Donald Trump, during a recent visit to Doha, reassured Qatar of American protection and expressed dissatisfaction with Israel's unilateral decision to strike. He emphasized Qatar's critical role as a mediator in the Gaza conflict. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a press conference, reiterated his commitment to targeting Hamas leaders wherever they are found.
