Russian Opposition Leader Charged for Army Criticism
Maxim Kruglov, deputy leader of Russia's Yabloko party, faces charges for allegedly spreading falsehoods about the Russian army via social media. This incident highlights ongoing repression against critics of Russia's involvement in Ukraine. Yabloko, a vocal opponent of the conflict, faces increasing legal pressures ahead of next year's elections.
In a recent move by Russian authorities, Maxim Kruglov, deputy leader of the Yabloko party, was charged with propagating false information about the Russian army, state investigators announced on Thursday.
Kruglov, who faces a maximum sentence of 10 years, maintains his innocence. The charges stem from two Telegram posts made in 2022. His lawyer, Natalya Tikhonova, confirmed that his residence had been searched following his arrest.
Yabloko, a known critic of Russia's military actions in Ukraine, has previously urged President Putin to seek peace. The party is facing intensified scrutiny, with other members facing similar accusations, as the nation gears up for State Duma elections next year.
