The convoy was first targeted by roadside bombs and subsequently assaulted with gunfire by a significant number of militants in the Kurram district, according to multiple Pakistani security officials who spoke to Reuters. The Pakistani Taliban expressed their direct involvement in attacking the convoy through a statement to a Reuters journalist.

In response to ongoing offenses, Islamabad has accused Afghanistan of serving as a haven where militants train and plot assaults on Pakistan, allegations that have been firmly denied by Kabul.
