The Supreme Court has rescheduled the hearing date to October 15 regarding the plea submitted by Gitanjali J Angmo, the wife of detained climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. Angmo is challenging her husband's detention under the National Security Act and has appealed for his immediate release.
Presided over by Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria, the court was unable to proceed with the hearing as planned, deferring it to Wednesday. Earlier in October, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre and the Ladakh Union Territory but withheld issuing any order concerning the grounds of Wangchuk's detention, scheduling the next hearing for October 14.
Sonam Wangchuk has been held under the National Security Act after reportedly inciting violent protests in Ladakh, where demands for statehood led to four fatalities and numerous injuries. The detention, which can extend up to 12 months, has been contested by Angmo, who filed a habeas corpus to challenge the decision and requested immediate access to her husband and a reversal of the detention order.
