Federal officers shot a man in the elbow during an immigration enforcement operation in Los Angeles. A deputy US Marshal was also injured when a ricochet bullet hit him in the hand, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The confrontation occurred as the man tried to evade arrest by ramming the officers' vehicle with his car during a traffic stop. The man, who entered the US illegally and had previously escaped custody, was hospitalized along with the injured marshal.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin criticized sanctuary politicians and activists for encouraging resistance to arrest. A spokesperson confirmed the marshal's injuries were non-life-threatening, while the Los Angeles police provided traffic control but were not directly involved.
