Tamil Nadu DGP Appointment Sparks Political Row

Tamil Nadu Minister S Regupathy accused the Centre of proposing unacceptable police officers for the state's DGP post, alleging delay due to Union interference. He criticized AIADMK's Edappadi K Palaniswami for shifting blame to Chief Minister M K Stalin, asserting the issue is central interference, not state delay.

Controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu over the appointment of a new Director General of Police (DGP), as Minister S Regupathy accused the Centre of attempting to install preferred candidates to the post. Regupathy criticized the names proposed by the Centre as unacceptable, asserting this has delayed the appointment.

Regupathy further lashed out at AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, who blamed Chief Minister M K Stalin for not appointing a full-time DGP to allegedly gain electoral advantage. The Minister argued that Palaniswami overlooked his tenure without a DGP, stating the Chief Minister was defending the state's autonomy.

The issue, Regupathy insisted, was not about Tamil Nadu's inability to appoint a DGP, but more about central interference. Despite the Union Public Service Commission's selection panel proposing names, the Tamil Nadu government has objected, citing violations. Presently, G Venkataraman serves as acting DGP following Shankar Jiwal's retirement.
