The desecration of a Kali idol in Kakdwip's Suryanagar temple on Tuesday evening was termed an 'isolated and localised' incident by West Bengal Police, insisting no political motives were involved. The man responsible, identified as Narayan Halder, was arrested after confessing to the crime, which he committed while allegedly intoxicated.
Following the incident, tensions escalated as crowds, including outsiders, gathered to protest, blocking the National Highway and causing significant disruption. Police responded by safeguarding the desecrated idol and clearing the highway amidst stone-pelting by agitators. Two related cases, one for vandalism and another for the blockade, have been registered.
Despite claims from opposition parties suggesting a lapse in law and order, the ruling TMC lauded the police for their swift response. Additional forces have been deployed to prevent further escalation as investigations continue, including reviewing CCTV footage to identify those responsible for the road blockade.
