In a significant legal development, commentator Abhijit Iyer Mitra has petitioned the Delhi High Court to dismiss a defamation lawsuit filed against him. The case involves allegations by nine women journalists from the media house Newslaundry, accusing Mitra of making abusive remarks.
During the court proceedings, Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav inquired about the rationale behind Mitra's application. Mitra's legal representative explained that the primary counsel was unavailable and requested a rescheduling of the hearing.
The defamation suit, which is set for further hearing on February 26, 2026, seeks an injunction, a written apology, and Rs 2 crore in damages. The plaintiffs allege that Mitra used derogatory terms in an X post, targeting both the journalists and the Newslaundry organization.
