Poland has apprehended two Ukrainians and three Belarusians under suspicion of spying for foreign intelligence agencies, according to statements from prosecutors on Friday. This move comes amidst rising tensions, as Warsaw warns of Russian endeavors to destabilize nations supporting Kyiv through arson and cyberattacks.
Those detained, identified as Ukrainians Oleksandr S. and Sofia Ch., alongside Belarusians Viktoryia M., Anton M., and Uladzimir U., were caught by law enforcement and special services on November 25 and 26. Prosecutors allege their activities involved capturing and sending images of vital infrastructure crucial to national security in 2024 and early 2025.
Prosecutors indicated that the suspects received cryptocurrency payments for their actions. The espionage charge in Poland could lead to prison sentences ranging from 5 to 30 years. While three suspects remain in custody, the minor is held at a juvenile center, and Uladzimir U. is restricted from leaving Poland due to health reasons.
