On Monday, the Supreme Court stressed that air pollution in Delhi-NCR must receive attention beyond the customary focus during winter months. A newly-formed bench has called for bi-monthly reviews to assess immediate and long-term solutions.
Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi questioned the common narrative around stubble burning as the primary cause of pollution. Touching on the clear skies witnessed during COVID-19, CJI Kant noted other factors at play and urged against placing undue blame on farmers.
The court demands a detailed report from the Centre, urging an action plan from bodies like the Commission for Air Quality Management and Central Pollution Control Board. It plans to monitor the pollution situation bi-monthly to ensure effective implementation of measures aimed at tackling the air quality crisis.
