The incident unfolded around 3am on Thursday, as the couple's disagreement escalated. Balaji, a 28-year-old from Nanded, had relocated to Nagpur to participate in police recruitment exams and was staying in close proximity to Rati, a fourth-year BAMS student.

Authorities were led to investigate Rati after inconsistencies in her statements brought to light her involvement in the crime. It is reported that her father opposed the relationship, which added to the pressure and tension preceding the incident.
