Harvard Visiting Professor Arrest Sparks Diplomatic Tensions
Carlos Portugal Gouvea, a Brazilian professor at Harvard, was arrested by U.S. immigration authorities after firing a pellet gun near a synagogue in Massachusetts. The incident was labeled anti-Semitic by the Trump administration, but local authorities disagreed. Gouvea has agreed to leave the U.S. and return to Brazil.
A visiting professor at Harvard Law School was arrested by U.S. immigration authorities after discharging a pellet gun near a Massachusetts synagogue ahead of Yom Kippur, according to Homeland Security.
The professor, Carlos Portugal Gouvea, a Brazilian citizen, had his visa revoked following what the Trump administration described as an "anti-Semitic shooting incident." This characterization contrasts with that of local authorities, who do not see the incident as antisemitism. Gouvea, associated with the University of Sao Paulo Law School, consented to return to Brazil voluntarily, authorities stated.
The arrest highlights escalating tensions between the Trump administration and Harvard, with the former pressuring the university over various allegations, including insufficient actions to counter antisemitism. This dispute continues amid ongoing legal battles over terminated research grants. Meanwhile, local police clarified that Gouvea was uninformed of the synagogue's proximity and denied any religious motivations behind his actions.
