Escalating Tensions or Path to Peace: Thailand-Cambodia Border Conflict
The Thai foreign minister emphasizes that tariffs should not pressure Thailand into talks with Cambodia amid renewed border conflicts. With both nations involved in artillery exchanges, the situation has worsened since July, despite a ceasefire. Thailand urges Cambodia to demonstrate sincerity and adhere to peace talks.
The Thai foreign minister has stated that using tariffs to coerce Thailand into initiating discussions with Cambodia and halting border skirmishes is inappropriate. This follows the resurgence of hostilities on Monday after weeks of strained relations, resulting in 12 fatalities and the displacement of thousands along the border.
Despite previous threats from U.S. President Donald Trump in July, which resulted in a ceasefire, tensions reignited, challenging the fragile peace. Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow asserted that trade negotiations should remain separate from Thai-Cambodian relations.
Reports indicate heavy artillery exchanges along the 817-km border, with Thailand's military standing ready to defend its sovereignty. Both nations blame each other for violating past agreements, with Thailand waiting for Cambodia to cease hostilities before peace talks can proceed.
