The Karnataka Legislative Assembly convened on Wednesday to table twelve pivotal bills aimed at amending state legislation. Among these, the Drugs and Cosmetics (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2025, seeks to empower state authorities by amending the original 1940 Act. This bill shifts the burden of proof for seized drugs and cosmetics, prescribing harsher enforcement rules.
Additionally, the Assembly discussed amendments to the Karnataka Labour Welfare Fund, which expands its reach to establishments with more than ten employees. An e-banking system is also in the pipeline to streamline contributions. The session highlighted broad legislative adjustments, including decriminalizing minor offenses under the Karnataka Rent Amendment Bill.
The Assembly saw the introduction of other significant bills, including those aimed at renaming universities and addressing hate speech. However, the expected amendments to the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill were conspicuously absent from the agenda.
