The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated female corporators Neeta Thakre and Leela Hatibed for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The BJP's decision comes ahead of the municipal elections scheduled for February 6, where the opposition Congress has fielded women's candidates Snehal Thakare and Vivek Nikose.

A lottery conducted last month decided that the NMC's new mayor would be a woman from the general category. In alignment with this, the BJP registered the nomination of their candidates at the divisional commissioner's office, following deliberations with prominent leaders, including Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Nagpur Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule.

Highlighting the party's commitment to female leadership, the BJP has announced plans to appoint a woman corporator as chairperson of the NMC's standing committee. Notably, the BJP secured 102 seats out of 151 in the recent municipal polls, with women winning 55 of these seats, signaling a significant trend towards gender-forward leadership in Nagpur's civic administration.
