Rafah Crossing Struggles Amid Ceasefire Challenges

Palestinians are facing delays and restrictions as they try to cross the Rafah border between Gaza and Egypt for medical treatment. Despite a fragile ceasefire, bureaucratic difficulties and security concerns have limited crossings, with only small numbers allowed to pass each day.

Despite the reopening of Rafah border crossing, Palestinians on both sides of the Gaza-Egypt border are experiencing protracted delays. The crossing is marred by disagreements over logistics and security vetting, impacting those in urgent need of medical care.

On the Egyptian side, many Palestinians previously treated in Egyptian hospitals are finding it difficult to return home. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Red Crescent has been transporting individuals requiring medical attention that Gaza cannot provide.

Though promises were made to facilitate crossings, only a fraction of those in need have been allowed through, causing ongoing humanitarian concerns. As Israel and Egypt negotiate the terms, hope remains that the crossing might eventually operate more efficiently.
