Italian Prime Minister's Strategic Gulf Tour Amid Heightened Energy Concerns
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni embarked on an unannounced visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE to strengthen ties with Gulf partners amidst rising tensions with Iran. The trip aims to support allies and secure Italy's energy supplies as it navigates interrupted LNG shipments and increasing fuel costs.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni undertook a surprise diplomatic mission to the Gulf, marking the first visit by a European leader to Saudi Arabia since the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran erupted in February. In Jeddah, Meloni is set to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss energy security and ally support.
The two-day trip underscores Italy's commitment to aiding Gulf allies against Iranian aggression and securing its energy reserves amidst rising fuel prices. Notably, Italy aims to reassure its commitment to investing in the region, with major firms like Eni taking the lead.
Amid interruptions in LNG deliveries from Qatar and heightened security risks, Meloni has increased diplomatic activities to bolster energy pathways, recently visiting Algeria for additional gas and planning future visits to Azerbaijan. However, security concerns have excluded Kuwait from her current itinerary.
