The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), facing strong opposition from BJP MLA Amit Shah, has retracted its plan to construct a Rs 32 crore slaughterhouse. The proposal was originally part of AMC's 2026-27 draft budget and intended to modernize the existing abattoir in line with Supreme Court and government guidelines.
The new facility, planned for Shahwadi-Behrampura, was to include doctors' availability, antemortem inspection, and modern units for cattle processing. AMC envisioned an environmentally compliant, hygienic site with advanced chilling and transport facilities. However, Shah's objection, rooted in party ideology, led to its withdrawal.
Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani clarified that the initiative aimed to shift operations, not build anew, following central pollution guidelines. Yet, due to its sensitive nature, the proposal was scrapped, aligning with the standing committee's opinion.
