More than 40 inmates at Neemka Jail have embarked on a hunger strike in response to a reduction in their weekly phone call privileges. The prisoners allege that their protests were met with threats and abusive conduct by jail authorities.
A note detailing their grievances, which surfaced online on Saturday, claims that inmates were previously permitted to make phone calls home three days a week, but this has been cut to two. Attempts by prisoners to seek clarification were reportedly met with insults, according to the note.
The note further warns of alleged threats of confinement and violence, raising alarm about inmates' safety and treatment. This development follows the recent killing of an inmate accused of plotting to bomb the Ram temple, which already heightened security concerns and led to suspensions and an investigation within the jail management.
