The European Union is taking a closer look at Shein, the popular online retailer, as concerns mount over its sale of illegal products and an addictive platform design. This investigation, conducted under the Digital Services Act, highlights the necessity for major online platforms to prioritize user safety by curbing dodgy products.
The inquiry will gauge Shein's measures in limiting the sale of illegal goods, such as child-like sex dolls and weaponry previously found on its site in France. Authorities there attempted to suspend access to Shein, leading to this investigation, which could require Shein to alter its operations or face substantial fines.
Additionally, the probe will evaluate Shein's systems for reducing risks linked to its design, accused of fostering user addiction through engagement rewards. There are also concerns over how products are recommended without transparency. Shein has promised cooperation and significant investments to align with regulations, emphasizing user protection, particularly for minors.
