In Maharashtra, there has been a notable decrease in dowry-related crimes over the last five years, according to Minister Pankaj Bhoyar. Speaking in the state assembly, Bhoyar highlighted intensified government efforts to combat the practice, including stricter laws and increased vigilance.
The state has seen a drop from 180 cases of dowry-related crimes in 2022 to 138 in 2025. This decline is attributed to the implementation of the Maharashtra Dowry Prohibition Rules, 2003, and the appointment of dowry prohibition officers. A special police wing has also been established to prevent crimes against women and children.
Despite these measures, lawmakers like Congress's Jyoti Gaikwad have expressed concerns over ongoing dowry harassment. Issues such as delayed justice and fraudulent marriages in rural areas were raised, with calls for expedited investigations and stricter legal enforcement.
