Safeguarding Indigenous Rights: Meghalaya's BJP Stance on Election Integrity

The Meghalaya BJP has asserted a firm stance against allowing any infiltrators to participate in elections, including the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) polls. The move is aimed at safeguarding the rights of indigenous communities, as the council was established for their protection.

Amid concerns from the opposition Voice of the People's Party (VPP) over non-Garos contesting the tribal council elections, BJP state unit president Rikman G Momin reiterated that the GHADC, governed by the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, must remain exclusive to ensure tribal self-governance and rights protection.

In response to rising tensions and violence surrounding the now-postponed GHADC elections, Momin highlighted suspicious attempts by infiltrators to integrate into the electoral process through marriages and false documentation. The BJP is considering stricter laws to prevent such actions, as the central leadership supports restoring order in the Garo Hills region.
