Attorney-General Judith Collins has announced that incoming Solicitor-General Anna Adams will be appointed King’s Counsel (KC), recognising her extensive contribution to the legal profession and her leadership in public law.

The prestigious title of King’s Counsel is awarded to lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional skill, integrity and service to the law, marking one of the highest professional honours within the legal community.

Recognition for Legal Excellence

Collins said the appointment reflects Adams’ outstanding career and the significance of her new role as Solicitor-General, the Crown’s junior Law Officer.

“It is appropriate that the Solicitor-General as the junior Law Officer of the Crown, be appointed as King’s Counsel,” Collins said.

“Ms Adams is an exceptional lawyer and a leader in the profession. She is widely respected for her judgement, integrity, and commitment to the law.”

The Attorney-General added that Adams’ selection as Solicitor-General had already been warmly welcomed across the legal sector.

“Her appointment as Solicitor-General has been very well-received. I congratulate her on becoming a King’s Counsel.”

Nearly Three Decades of Legal Experience

Adams brings 28 years of experience in public law, with a career spanning both complex litigation and high-level legal advisory work.

Public law specialists typically handle cases involving constitutional issues, government decision-making, regulatory frameworks and judicial review, making the expertise critical to the functioning of government and the justice system.

Her experience has positioned her as one of New Zealand’s most respected public law practitioners.

Role of the Solicitor-General

The Solicitor-General plays a central role within New Zealand’s legal system, acting as the Crown’s chief courtroom advocate and providing legal leadership to Crown prosecutors nationwide.

The position includes responsibilities such as:

• Representing the Crown in major constitutional and appellate cases• Overseeing the Crown prosecution service• Advising government on complex legal matters• Supporting the Attorney-General in upholding the rule of law

Adams will formally begin her term as Solicitor-General on 11 May 2026.

Significance of the King’s Counsel Title

The rank of King’s Counsel, historically known as Queen’s Counsel when the monarch is female, is granted to senior barristers who have demonstrated excellence in advocacy and leadership within the legal profession.
