The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has unveiled an ambitious initiative under the banner 'Project Homecoming', targeting illegal immigrants willing to self-deport. The program offers them complimentary flights and a $2,600 financial incentive to return to their home countries.

The project engages with immigrants from various nations, including India, Colombia, and China, as highlighted in promotional materials depicting iconic symbols such as the Taj Mahal. Since its inception in May last year, over 2.2 million individuals have utilized the program, DHS reports.

DHS aims to offer a dignified alternative to enforced deportation, where each case costs the US government around $18,245. By incentivizing voluntary departures, the scheme sees costs reduced to approximately $5,100 per participant, representing significant taxpayer savings.
