The Government is preparing to roll out a major upgrade to the Govt.nz app, introducing a suite of new digital features designed to transform how citizens access public services, Minister for Digitising Government and Public Service Judith Collins announced.
The enhancements mark a significant step in New Zealand’s broader digital transformation strategy, aiming to create a more connected, secure, and user-friendly government experience.
Digital Wallet to Launch This Month
At the centre of the upgrade is the introduction of a digital wallet, expected to go live by the end of this month. The feature will allow users to securely store and present accredited digital credentials issued by both government agencies and approved private sector organisations.
“The Govt.nz App will provide New Zealanders with easy access to government digital services such as communications and proof of digital identity,” Collins said.
The wallet is designed to streamline everyday interactions with government services, reducing reliance on physical documents while improving convenience and accessibility.
First Use Case: Digital Kiwi Access Card
In a notable public-private collaboration, Hospitality New Zealand, in partnership with the Department of Internal Affairs, is set to introduce the first accredited credential into the wallet—subject to legislative changes.
The digital Kiwi Access Card could soon enable users to verify their age at bars, events, and licensed venues using their smartphones.
This innovation is expected to:
-
Eliminate the need for physical ID cards
-
Speed up entry processes at venues
-
Reduce fraud risks through secure verification
-
Minimise physical handling of identification documents
Industry stakeholders see this as a potential game-changer for both customer experience and compliance in the hospitality sector.
New Government Credential Issuance Platform
Alongside the wallet, the Government will launch a Credential Issuance Platform, enabling agencies to issue digital credentials directly into users’ wallets.
This all-of-government system is designed to:
-
Standardise credential issuance across departments
-
Reduce duplication of systems and costs
-
Improve interoperability between services
-
Deliver better value for taxpayers
The platform represents a foundational layer for future digital services, potentially supporting everything from licences and permits to educational and professional certifications.
Secure Messaging Coming by July 2026
Looking ahead, the Govt.nz app will introduce secure in-app messaging by July 2026, allowing agencies to communicate directly with citizens.
Planned use cases include:
-
Vehicle registration reminders
-
Travel advisories and alerts
-
Service updates and official notifications
This feature aims to centralise government communications in one trusted channel, reducing reliance on fragmented systems like email or physical mail.
Focus on Security, Choice, and Accessibility
Officials emphasise that the upgraded app is being built with a strong focus on security, privacy, and usability. The system will support robust identity verification and data protection standards to ensure user trust.
Importantly, the Government has reiterated that use of the app will remain entirely voluntary, with traditional service channels continuing to operate alongside digital options.
“These new features will give New Zealanders more choice in how they access government services through an app that is robust, secure, and widely usable,” Collins said.
Part of a Broader Digital Transformation Push
The rollout aligns with New Zealand’s ongoing efforts to modernise public services through digital innovation. By integrating identity, credentials, and communications into a single platform, the Govt.nz app is positioned to become a central hub for citizen-government interaction.
Experts note that such platforms, already being adopted globally, can significantly improve service delivery efficiency, reduce administrative burdens, and enhance user experience.
Looking Ahead
As the digital wallet and credential system go live, attention will turn to how quickly agencies and private sector partners adopt the platform—and how widely New Zealanders embrace it.
If successful, the Govt.nz app could set a benchmark for secure, citizen-centric digital governance in the region.
