The Supreme Court on Wednesday urged the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court to devise expedited policy decisions for handling sensitive cases, especially those involving racial discrimination against individuals from the north-east region of India.
While considering a plea for time-bound trials in such matters, a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant emphasized the need for prioritizing and advancing these cases. During the proceedings, the petitioner's counsel highlighted the well-publicized 2014 murder of 19-year-old Nido Tania from Arunachal Pradesh, citing prolonged trial durations even when investigations had concluded and chargesheets were submitted.
In a related issue, the bench encouraged Attorney General R Venkataramani to refer a PIL, concerning discrimination and violence against north-eastern citizens, to a suitable platform. Prompted by the racially charged murder of 24-year-old Anjel Chakma, the court underscored the urgency of preventing such regressive discrimination.
