India's Digital Census: A New Era in Self-Enumeration

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indians to engage with the self-enumeration process of the Census 2027, which embarked on its initial phase on April 1. The Census, a crucial national exercise, introduces digital data collection methods for the first time, allowing citizens to input their data online.

In an effort to enhance the Census process, self-enumeration empowers citizens to register their household details digitally, providing a convenient and accessible method for participation. Modi expressed this appeal in a social media post, highlighting the importance of this new digital dimension in India's 16th Census.

The first phase, known as the Housing Listing Operations (HLO), will be conducted over a 30-day period in each state and union territory, with an additional 15-day window for self-enumeration preceding the HLO. This schedule is tailored for specific regions, including detailed plans for New Delhi areas, ensuring organized data collection across the country.
