The North West Provincial Treasury has issued a strong warning to businesses and the public following the circulation of fraudulent messages falsely claiming that a government tender has been awarded.
According to the department, scammers are targeting individuals and service providers with communications alleging the awarding of a tender titled “BID NWP002/25 for the supply and delivery of cleaning chemicals to the North West Provincial Government for a period of three years.” The messages misleadingly claim to originate from the Head of Department.
Treasury Dismisses Claims as Fraudulent
The Provincial Treasury has categorically denied the authenticity of these communications, labeling them as fraudulent and misleading. In an official statement, the department clarified that the Head of Department does not participate in procurement or tender adjudication processes.
“All official procurement processes are conducted in line with established Supply Chain Management policies. Any communication regarding bids or awards is issued only through formal, verifiable departmental channels,” the Treasury stated.
This clarification aims to prevent businesses from falling victim to scams that often involve requests for sensitive financial or personal information.
Tender Process Still Underway
The department confirmed that the tender in question was legitimately advertised and has since closed. However, the adjudication process is still ongoing and will follow all legally mandated procedures before any official award is made.
This means that any claims suggesting that the tender has already been awarded are false and should be treated with suspicion.
Public and Businesses Urged to Exercise Caution
Authorities have urged stakeholders to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with suspicious communications. Businesses are specifically advised:
-
Not to share personal, banking, or company information with unknown sources
-
To verify all tender-related information through official government platforms
-
To report any suspicious messages or requests to law enforcement agencies immediately
The Treasury emphasized that scams involving fake tenders have become increasingly sophisticated, often mimicking official communication formats to deceive recipients.
Strengthening Awareness Against Procurement Fraud
This warning highlights the growing need for awareness around procurement-related fraud, particularly as government tenders represent significant business opportunities and attract high levels of interest.
The department reiterated that transparency and due process remain central to all government procurement activities, and any legitimate communication will always come through verified and traceable channels.
For verification or further information, stakeholders are encouraged to contact the North West Provincial Treasury directly through its official communication platforms.
