EU Reignites Ties with Syria: A New Era of Engagement
The European Union is set to resume formal talks with Syria, aiming to strengthen political, economic, and security relations. This includes reframing sanctions and supporting Syria's reintegration into the international community. The EU plans to facilitate refugee returns, boost trade, and back regional connectivity projects.
The European Union (EU) is taking significant steps to renew its relations with Syria, intending to reengage via formal political talks and open avenues for economic collaboration. This move signals a shift in EU's foreign policy towards Syria after years of diplomatic distancing.
According to a document accessed by Reuters, the EU plans to reinstate the 1978 cooperation agreement with Syria and set a High-Level Political Dialogue in motion. This decision comes amid efforts to adapt the bloc's sanctions regime to maintain leverage while ensuring constructive engagement with Syrian authorities.
Further plans include enhancing Syria's position as a vital transit hub in the region and fostering conditions for the voluntary repatriation of refugees. Additionally, the EU emphasizes security cooperation, which includes training Syrian police and increasing efforts against terrorism.
