Turkish Scholar Returns Home After U.S. Settlement
Rumeysa Ozturk, a pro-Palestinian activist and student from Tufts University, returned to Turkey after settling with the U.S. government. Her detention was part of a Trump administration initiative against pro-Palestinian campus activists. The settlement concluded legal battles regarding her visa revocation and detention.
Rumeysa Ozturk, a graduate student at Tufts University and a pro-Palestinian activist, has returned to Turkey after reaching a settlement with the U.S. government. This decision follows her arrest by immigration agents last year, a move linked to the Trump administration's target on campus activists defending Palestinian rights.
Ozturk, who completed her PhD in child study and human development, was embroiled in legal proceedings after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security attempted to deport her, citing an editorial she co-authored as the reason. The situation escalated with her detention, which was eventually overturned by a federal judge.
Her attorneys, representing the American Civil Liberties Union, emphasized that the government recognized Ozturk had maintained legal status in the country throughout. The case has highlighted the broader scrutiny and challenges faced by international students with pro-Palestinian positions in the U.S.
