In a dramatic escalation of violence in Mali, two loud explosions and sustained gunfire were reported early Saturday near the Kati military base, just outside the capital city, Bamako. Soldiers swiftly deployed to the area, blocking roads, as uncertainty swirled regarding the explosions' origin.

The unexplained blasts occurred amid an ongoing struggle by Mali’s military leaders, who assumed power following coups in 2020 and 2021, to stabilize a country repeatedly targeted by militant groups. These groups have launched frequent attacks in the north and central regions, highlighting the challenges faced by the military.

Mali remains a hotspot of insurgency, grappling with threats from West African factions of al Qaeda and Islamic State, as well as a long-standing Tuareg rebellion.
