Ceasefire Under Fire: Tensions Escalate in Southern Lebanon
Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon resulted in four deaths amid continued clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, challenging an extended ceasefire. The Israeli military targeted Hezbollah positions, and warned residents to avoid the Litani River area. The ceasefire, facilitated by the U.S., was criticized by Hezbollah as ineffective.
Four individuals lost their lives on Saturday following Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon, as confirmed by Lebanon’s state news agency. Meanwhile, the Israeli military reported that Hezbollah had launched rockets into Israeli territory, further straining an already fragile ceasefire.
The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon had initially decreased hostilities significantly. However, tensions have persisted in southern Lebanon, particularly in areas where the Israeli military maintains a presence. Overnight, Israel targeted Hezbollah-operated rocket launchers and facilities, including those used by their elite Radwan forces.
The Lebanese state news agency did not clarify if the fatalities were a direct result of these strikes. The Israeli forces reiterated a warning urging Lebanese civilians to steer clear of the Litani River area amidst ongoing skirmishes with Hezbollah. Despite a U.S.-brokered extension to the ceasefire, a Hezbollah representative recently labeled the agreement as ineffective.
