In a landmark push to accelerate infrastructure-led growth, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the 594-kilometre-long access-controlled Greenfield Ganga Expressway in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh—now the country's longest green corridor expressway. The project is being hailed as a transformative development that will redefine connectivity, industrial expansion, and economic opportunities across one of India's most populous states.
Addressing a large gathering, the Prime Minister framed the expressway as both a symbol of modern infrastructure and a continuation of India's civilizational legacy, invoking the spiritual significance of the Ganga river.
"The boon of expressways to Uttar Pradesh is also a blessing from Maa Ganga herself," he said, highlighting how the project will drastically cut travel time to key religious and economic destinations.
India's Longest Green Corridor Built at Record Speed
Completed in less than five years, the Ganga Expressway reflects the government's emphasis on rapid execution of large-scale infrastructure projects. Spanning nearly 600 kilometres, the high-speed corridor connects western Uttar Pradesh's commercial hubs with central agricultural regions and eastern cultural centres—directly impacting millions of people across 12 districts.
"These modern lifelines are today proclaiming the bright future of India," the Prime Minister remarked, underlining the expressway's role in shaping a new growth trajectory.
Gateway to Industrial Expansion and Job Creation
Beyond improving mobility, the expressway is expected to serve as a catalyst for industrialization. The government is already planning industrial corridors along the route, particularly in districts like Hardoi, to attract investment in sectors such as:
-
Pharmaceuticals
-
Textiles and handlooms
-
Leather goods
-
Handicrafts and MSMEs
These developments are aligned with flagship initiatives like Mudra Yojana and One District One Product (ODOP), aimed at empowering small industries and boosting exports.
"All these will reach domestic and international markets on a large scale. This will increase the income of millions of families," PM Modi stated.
Boost to Farmers and Rural Economy
The expressway is also expected to address long-standing logistical challenges faced by farmers in Uttar Pradesh's fertile regions. Limited access to markets, storage, and transportation infrastructure has historically constrained agricultural income.
With faster connectivity and improved supply chains, the project is set to:
-
Reduce transportation costs
-
Improve market access for farm produce
-
Enable development of cold storage and logistics hubs
"This will increase our farmers' income," the Prime Minister emphasized, pointing to the expressway's role in strengthening rural prosperity.
Strengthening UP's Role as a Manufacturing Hub
Positioning Uttar Pradesh as a key pillar of India's economic future, PM Modi reiterated the state's ambition to become a $1 trillion economy. The expressway is expected to play a critical role in achieving this target by attracting large-scale investments and enabling industrial clustering.
The Prime Minister highlighted that:
-
India is now the world's second-largest mobile manufacturer, with nearly half of production taking place in Uttar Pradesh
-
The state is emerging as a hub for semiconductor manufacturing, with recent developments in Noida
-
Defense manufacturing is expanding, with one of India's two defense corridors located in the state, producing advanced systems like BrahMos missiles
"UP's industrial development is today becoming a strategic strength for India," he said.
Integrated Infrastructure Ecosystem Taking Shape
The Ganga Expressway is part of a broader infrastructure transformation underway in Uttar Pradesh. The Prime Minister noted the rapid expansion of the state's aviation network—from minimal connectivity to 21 operational airports, including five international airports.
The upcoming Noida International Airport, located within hours of the expressway corridor, is expected to further enhance logistics efficiency and global connectivity.
This integrated approach—combining highways, airports, and industrial zones—is designed to create a seamless ecosystem for trade, investment, and mobility.
From 'BIMARU' to Growth Engine
Highlighting the state's transformation, PM Modi contrasted Uttar Pradesh's past image as a "BIMARU" (economically lagging) state with its current trajectory as a fast-growing economic powerhouse.
Improved law and order, infrastructure development, and policy reforms have contributed to:
-
Increased investor confidence
-
Rising industrial activity
-
Enhanced employment opportunities for youth
"Today, UP's law and order is cited as an example throughout the country," he noted.
Driving India's Vision of Viksit Bharat
The Prime Minister placed the Ganga Expressway within the broader vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India), emphasizing that infrastructure development is central to national progress amid global uncertainties.
"We are not only secure but are also creating new milestones of development. We are advancing the Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign and building world-class infrastructure," he said.
Concluding his address, PM Modi expressed confidence that the people of Uttar Pradesh will leverage the opportunities created by the expressway to drive inclusive growth and prosperity.
"I am confident that the possibilities the Ganga Expressway will bring will be realized through the hard work and talent of the people," he said.
A Strategic Infrastructure Milestone
With its scale, speed of execution, and integrated development vision, the Ganga Expressway represents more than just a transport project—it is a strategic economic corridor poised to reshape Uttar Pradesh's development landscape and strengthen India's infrastructure backbone.
